Christian Group Boycotts Nickelodeon’s Degrassi Trans Character Adam Torres
The Florida Family Association is calling for an advertiser boycott of Nickelodeon’s Teen Nick channel over a transgender character on its show, Degrassi: The Next Generation. The anti-gay group is falsely claiming to have already forced Kodak, the show’s prime sponsor, to pull out. Of course this was immediately denied by Kodak. Not to mention that the fools over at the FFA seem to ignore (or totally oblivious) to the fact that Kodak has had a long and inclusive history when it comes to trans folks! As Kodak’s website notes: Kodak has achieved a significant milestone by creating a safe environment for our Transgender employees. Transgender employees have been visible in our work community for at least the last 60 years from areas around the world. And in addition, Kodak Worldwide Benefits has updated health plan coverage to include procedures, services, and supplies for sex transformation (gender reassignment).

Media witch hunt on Caster Semenya
The following is a press release from Gender DynamiX [first African based organisation solely focussing on the transgender community] regarding the negative and transphobic reporting of Caster Semenya, an 18-year-old who had never competed outside of Africa, before this week who aroused suspicions when she posted the fastest 800m time in the world this year, winning gold at the African junior championships. [Guardian article]
20 August 2009
This week South African media, in particular radio DJ’s and print media have been having a shameless orgy with the gender dispute of our gold medalist heroin competing in Berlin.
Last year we lost a South African sport star to a hate crime because she transgressed gender boundaries. Banyana soccer star Eudy Simelane was murdered in a township because she challenged expected gender stereotypes.
Is our media putting a South African hero’s life in danger on her return, gold medal in hand?
Instead of being proud of our champion the South African media and public is on a witch-hunt trying to define Semenya’s sex. DJ’s on radio are dissecting Semenya’s person to a point of reducing her accomplishments to her genitals. [Read more →]

The Latest Bullshit
I think the way a number of (but not all) QWB members feel about the marriage equality movement is either known or easy to intuit, with the same applying to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. There are also few amongst our ranks deluded by the inauthenticity of hope here. However, bullshit is bullshit, anticipated or not, and the latest bullshit is Obama’s justice [little j] department’s ruling on DOMA. Check it out: in the immortal words of Ice Cube, “Here’s what they think about you.“
You can find further commentary at Queers Against Obama. Yes, it is quite rude, but that’s much better than quite quiet, right?

Bush’s rendition of A Nightmare before Christmas
In the final days of its “Shock and Awe” attacks on agency regulation changes that are dismantling public protections, the Bush Administration has granted sweeping new protections to health care workers who can refuse to provide care if it violates their personal beliefs. Lord knows what this will mean the next time I seek health care treatment as an openly out trans person!
The Department of Health and Human Services published in yesterday’s (12/18/08) Federal Register the final version of its “conscience rules” that protect health care providers who have moral or religious objections to performing or furnishing particular services. (see HHS News Release.) The Federal Register release titled Ensuring That Department of Health and Human Services Funds Do Not Support Coercive or Discriminatory Policies or Practices in Violation of Federal Law provides that the new rules take effect January 20, 2009– just before the change in administrations. This 127-page rule, was issued just in time to take effect in the 30 days before the change in administrations so adding to the growing list of last minute rules Bush is implementing before he finally leaves office. And sadly this is simply one of many agency regulations over the last month or so that have dismantled so many public protections or put another way “Bush’s rendition of a Nightmare before Christmas!”

Bash Back! Memphis Kicks Off the “Avenge Duanna” Campaign
In the evening hours of Saturday, November 22nd, anonymous BB! Memphis operatives called in to request that a hearse, a casket, and a dozen pink daisies be delivered to Officer Bridges McRae, Duanna Johnson's attacker, as he dressed for church on Sunday. A note attached to the flowers read; "See you soon... -Duanna BB!" --- Officer Bridges McRae is responsible for beating Duanna Johnson with handcuffs and fists just months prior to her "mysterious" death. It is clear that McRae and others in the notoriously anti-trans/queer Memphis Police Department had it out for Duanna. Bash Back! News, clandestine queers, and above ground activists know that the MPD murdered Duanna. Anyone who denies this fact is living the bubbble that Bash Back! is dedicated to bursting.

We Almost Lost Detroit
The brilliance of McCain shines through each and every day of his pitiful life. Today he went to the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant near Monroe, Michigan (not far from Detroit) to espouse the benefits of Nuclear Energy and made the brilliant statement (regarding nuclear power): “I knew it was safe then (when he was in the Navy) … I know it’s safe now.” I can only surmise that this president wannabe fool is a total idiot when it comes to historical facts (and of course most things he says confirms this) for in 1966 the Fermi 1 reactor suffered a partial fuel meltdown! Or perhaps he wasn’t tuned into Gil Scott-Heron’s powerful song “We Almost Lost Detroit” or guess he wasn’t rapping to MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy whose first album was No NUKES!). I have pasted just a sampling of Gil Scott-Heron’s song below:
Just thirty miles from Detroit
stands a giant power station.
It ticks each night as the city sleeps
seconds from anniahlation.
But no one stopped to think about the people
or how they would survive,
and we almost lost Detroit
this time.
Though perhaps such insensitive and stupid actions are part of his repertoire considering on June 17, [Read more →]
